Top Tips for Car Buyers
Slow Down: Speed in the automobile transaction is very dangerous.
Budget before you shop: Know what you plan to spend before you get to the dealer. Get pre-qualified for your loan at the credit union first to help you with this process. This way you’ll know the credit union’s interest rates for car loans and what you can afford for a weekly or monthly loan payment.
Do your homework: Whether you use a car guide or other resources, seek out actual transaction prices, dealer invoices, resale values and special incentives.
Don’t fall for “spot” delivery: You know, take it home “on the spot”, the first time you’ve seen the car. Spot delivery means your emotions, not your pocketbook, are ruling the transaction.
Put it to the test: Take a long, hard test drive in any car you plan to buy. To avoid pressure, state up front that you’re not looking to buy today.
Don’t get hustled: You’ve settled on a price and are sitting in the office where you’ll close the deal. Now firmly reject any attempt to pad the dealer’s profit with needless extended warranties, service contracts or equipment you didn’t ask for.
Plan to finance your car with the credit union: The credit union has low loan rates, fast, courteous service and the convenience of payroll deduction or direct deposit payments. If the dealer is offering a choice of low interest financing or a cash rebate, take the rebate and finance with the credit union. The rebate is almost always worth more than the difference in the finance charge.
Stop the transaction if you feel pressured or confused.
